Lessons Fro The Blind

Dear Friends at Pattern Realm, This blog tells stories of self empowerment in the blindness c ommunity. Blind people for too long have been surrounded by stigma and misconception. But yesterday I sat down with my good friend and fellow Toastmaster Mike to talk about lessons both of have learned as men who happen to be blind. We believe in self advocacy and empowerment. 3 days ago in Sunday School a teacher with caution asked me "I know that you are blind, but not offending you, I notice you can see to read, how is that." I calmly explained to him that there was no offense taken. Blindness is just a simple physical characteristic that doesn't define us. I could've patterned my life life after Theodore Roosevelt, but I had people who saw a better path for mine. No one owes us equality. With alternative techniques the blind can function in society on terms of full equality. Leaders like George Card, Jacobus Tenbrook Kenneth Jernigan, and Marc Mauer have dmodeled this for us. With white canes, NLS talking book machines and adaptive technology we can empower ourselves and tap into our God given destiny. In Christ, Jimmy LGP
